Domestic Violence in Hawaii
34.7% of Hawaii women and 24.1% of Hawaii men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes.
Hawaii is Expensive
In Hawaii a single person needs to earn $70-$100K, meanwhile a single parent family need to earn $120-$200K to live comfortably. Unfortunately most survivors of DV are unable to walk into a job making $120K a year.
Programs Are Overwhelmed
In a single day in Hawaii in 2019, 52% of the state’s domestic violence programs served 578 adults and children. 58 requests for help went unmet due to lack of resources. With the pandemic those numbers greatly increased and hundreds were left without much needed assistance.
Isolation
Hawaii is a beautiful place to raise a family but it can be thousands of miles from people’s hometowns and support networks. Many survivors of DV are military spouses who are used to moving a lot and being isolated. Leaving DV while isolated thousands of miles from friends and family is difficult. And divorcing on the island has a high likelihood of ending with joint custody meaning all parties must continue to live on the island indefinitely.
